Many bathers who come to Zlatne stijene in the summer, the popular tourist resort and beach, are surely not aware of the fact that the rocks along the coast are 100 million years old. A long time ago these magnificent beaches were the muddy coast of a shallow tropical sea, where dinosaurs used to trod. Some of their tracks in the yellow mud became fossilized and preserved under the thick layers of rocks. The sea and other forces of nature have revealed them again and if you explore this area in detail, you can discover such tracks at Zlatne stijene. Scientists, who have been searching for dinosaur tracks on the beaches of Pula, have found traces of small theropods (carnivorous or meat-eating dinosaurs) and long-necked herbivorous (plant-eating) sauropods along the very coast. Traces about half a meter long have also been found on the rocks, indicating that the dinosaur was about 9 meters long. However, the most interesting track is more than one meter long. Scientists believe that such a dinosaur could have weighed over 10 tons.
If you happen to discover an interesting track at Zlatne stijene, then this is probably a dinosaur footprint which is millions of years old.
