Useful tips

From the 1st of June the new traffic rules and regulations have been imposed in Croatia, and the fines and penalties are heavier than before. To start with, the so-called "0 per mille" limit by which the driver was not allowed to drink even a beer is not effective any more. The driver is allowed to have up to 0.5 per mille alcohol level, yet at the same time there will be no mercy for drunk drivers. Drivers caught by the police with 0.5 - 1 per mille alcohol level will have to pay a fine of 1,000 - 2,000 kunas, whereas the fine for over 1.5 per mille will range between 5,000 and 15,000 kunas. So, our advice to all drivers is: be careful, not only because of heavy fines.

The regulation on driving with your lights on during the day, except in winter months has been lifted, as well as restriction of driving a drunken co-driver.

When driving through Croatia, don't step on the gas too much. The fines for exceeding the speeding limit are from 300 - 15,000 kunas. The heaviest fine is for speeding up to 50 km/h over the posted limit in urban areas. The fine for speeding up to 50 km/h over the limit outside urban areas is 3,000 to 7,000 kunas.

The fine for leaving the scene of the accident or disobeying the policeman's stop signal is 7,000 kunas, driving without driver's license 1,000 kunas, failing to stop at a red light and driving in the opposite direction up to 5,000 kunas.
